I needed an electric unit heater for a garage workshop conversion. The garage is detached block building with almost no insulation. So far this heater is fitting the bill. I like it's 650 CFM rating. It's amout as loud as a small box fan, so conversation at normal levels is still possible. From the corner it doesn't really blow air directly forward but more along each of the two walls it faces away from. I'm not sure if that has something to do with the air being pulled in from the sides or not. Obviously due to my lack of insulation and the fact that I don't run the heater when I'm not in the shop, it does take a while to warm up the space (17x18 with an unisulated 12' hip roof.) I do plan to insulate the ceiling and I'll update my review then. I purchased the mounting bracket which attaches to a wall and allows the unit to be pivoted around a central axis. The mounting bracket isn't a must buy, the instructions give a diameter and thread count for using thread rod if you wish to go that route.Next, some info for the DIYer. This unit comes with an internal contactor and 24v transformer so it uses a standard 24v thermostat commonly found at any hardware store or here on Amazon. The voltage connections are 240v or 208v single phase. It can be rewired out of the box for usage on 3 phase. On a 240v line voltage the output is 10,000W (about 34,000 BTUs) and on 208v the output is 7,500W (about 26,000 BTUs). This unit consumes 42Amps on the 240V line volatge so make sure you have it on at least a 50A breaker with properly sized wire feeding it as per your local codes. If as in my case you plan on installing this in an out-building, you will likely need to run an upgraded electrical service to your out-building. As always, if this greek to you, consult a licenced electrician in your area for assitance.
All in all I'm quite pleased with this unit. I live in the mid-west so we see average highs in the winter of 20s and 30s. So far this unit runs often to get the temps up to a comfortable 68 but can still do it. Bear in mind I still have a few holes to plug, so this unit is also working against a draft. If your just starting the process of looking for a unit heater and still deciding on electric vs gas and sizing, there's a lot of really useful resourses online. H-mac has some helpful info for DIYers as well as some really decent heat load calculators. One last thing, the price on Amazon fluctuates wildy on this heater. The 102 shouldn't cost much more that $530 including shipping, a quick Google search will find you other online distributers is the price here isn't in that range.
