Most building codes require that bathrooms without windows have a fan to promote the removal of fumes and moisture. Most buildings are built with inexpensive units of the propeller design that barely meet requirements when new. They become even less effective as they age and gunk gets on the blades. When one has a small bathroom that is used by several people, those fans typically do not remove the air quick enough to prevent the shower / bath moisture buildup that leads to mildew and peeling paint. In contrast, the Fantech is a squirrel cage fan that pulls lots of air.

I installed Fantech REC 6 fans in the two bathrooms where I was having to frequently repaint because of moisture induced damage. It has been two years since the first fan was installed, and there are no longer any signs of peeling paint or mildew. The fan is strong enough that if the bathroom door is not latched, it will pull the door partially open.

My only complaint is that the fan is noisier than I expected although no louder than the original fan. People are reticent to turn on the fan if they're worried that the noise will wake someone in an adjacent room. If they don't turn on the fan, it can't remove bath / shower moisture. Obviously, the fan doesn't make so much noise that it is not used.
