Metalfrio (HBC60) 5.3 Undercounter Beer Cooler Review

Most beers (sorry Europe) taste best when chilled to about 26-28 degrees Fahrenheit.

So if you are looking for a refrigerator that will provide that level of cooling, you need to consider this unit.

A refrigerator doesn't usually have to deal with frost...that's why most small inexpensive refrigerators will only cool to 36-38 degrees or so. If you want to achieve sub-freezing temperatures for your beverages, you'll need a refrigerator like this one -- built almost like a freezer. That requires the unit to not only have a thermostat that goes that low, but also have a "defrost" cycle to clear any accumulated frost.

I purchased this unit recently and it is great. Keeps the temperature between 26-28 degrees. (It is more of a commercial unit...but still works well in our home). Owners manual says the temp can be set for anywhere between 18 degrees and 46 degrees Fahrenheit (-8 to +8 Celsius if you think that way).

Negatives: It is not very loud, but it is louder than most home refrigerator units. We plan to build it into our cabinetry (which it is capable of as it vents air in the kick area below the door), so that will reduce the sound. Also, our unit made some "rattling" noise on start up and shut down which I isolated to the drip pan that is just above the compressor. Removed the rear grill (4 screws), put a 2" piece of foam rubber tape on the bottom of the pan, replaced the grill and its fixed.

Bottom line -- if you want truly cold beer in a under cabinet refrigerator, your choices are very limited. This is a good solution that should be considered. Look around for your best pricing...it seems that all the websites I found will have the unit drop shipped by the manufacturer (from Texas) anyway.

    Dimensions: 15.0" wide x 23.3" deep x 34.5" tall
    Power: 115-120V, 1.2A

UPDATE: 06/04/13: I finished building it into a cabinet in our kitchen (the same width as most trash compactors). That really improved the quietness...and it looks great.
