The Fowler 52-085 series master inch/metric vernier caliper measures in inches and metric, has a 0.001"/0.02mm graduation, and two-way jaws for measuring the inside diameter (ID) and outside diameter (OD) of holes, grooves, and tube thicknesses. Three-inch jaws provide access to hard-to-reach areas and improved accuracy over longer measuring ranges. The open-face design allows both vernier scales to be located on one side of the gauge for both inside and outside measurements. A fine-adjustment screw ensures accurate measurements, and a locking screw secures the measurement tightly in place for accurate readings. An extra-long vernier ensures accuracy. Sharp black graduations and wide-spaced microfine graduations on a satin-finished bar ease reading. Raised sliding surfaces prevent wear of graduations for accuracy and long life. Verniers can be adjusted as wear occurs over time, and ground and lapped measuring faces ensure accuracy and wear resistance. Hardened stainless steel construction provides durability and wear resistance. The caliper includes a fitted case.

Vernier calipers are measuring instruments commonly used for inspection in manufacturing to provide the precise measurements of an object. A pair of jaws attached to a long beam with a marked scale is used to take inside, outside, and step measurements. An additional depth probe slides along the beam to take depth measurements. One jaw is fixed to the end of the scale, while the other jaw slides along it with gearless precision to take measurements. The main scale is engraved directly on the beam while the vernier scale is engraved on the slider mechanism. The base measurement is taken from the long beam, which provides the initial whole measurement in inches, centimeters, or millimeters. A locking mechanism provides the ability to take differential measurements for determining the difference in measurements between two objects. Compared to digital and dial calipers, vernier calipers are more durable because they do not have internal moving parts, and are less prone to inaccuracy caused by shock, debris, and other contaminants, but they can be more difficult to read than digital and dial calipers. Vernier calipers are commonly used in fields such as metalworking, mechanical engineering, machining, and carpentry.

I needed a 12" calipers for hobby use to measure bicycle crank lengths and such, and for general measuring in other hobbies I have. I had a 6" vernier caliper that I've had for years and it just wasn't long enough for a certain percentage of my measuring needs. I prefer a vernier calipers over the dial or digital calipers for the durability, simplicity, and elegance of a time-proven classic tool.

I'm not a professional machinist, but I have an appreciation of fine hand tools and am willing to pay extra for quality tools. I almost universally purchase USA-made tools, and am willing to pay the premium. The Starrett version of this is made in the USA but I just couldn't justify the $200+ price tag for something I might use a few times a year.

This Fowler tool fit the bill nicely despite the fact it's made in China. There's no country of origin engraved on it, on purpose I think, but I have to say they made a nice tool. I thought the workmanship was OK with minimal dings or other evidence of mass-production. It functioned perfectly. I don't have any 'standard' to measure, to test its accuracy but then again, as a hobbiest, I won't be doing aerospace-level accuracy work with it. It would be instructing to compare the Starrett to this side-by-side and I suspect the Starrett would come out ahead but at a steep cost, and for no improvement in functionality.

I don't see any reason a professional couldn't use this in a day-to-day workplace, but they might prefer a dial model.

It comes covered in light oil, in a plastic wrapper in the wooden carrying case. A little bit of Windex on a cloth got it ready for use. The wooden carrying case it comes in is really flimsy but you could reinforce it a bit if you wanted to with minimal effort.

The website description of this calipers, which is model #52-085-012 is actually incorrect The "085" series of vernier calipers does NOT have a depth gauge capability, whereas the slightly more expensive "058" series does. I actually would have preferred the "058" series calipers but I couldn't find one in the price range I paid.

I got mine new on ebay from one of the mass on-line retailers for $46. It wasn't listed as a Fowler instrument, and you had to look carefully at the picture to see the manufacturer's name on it.
