Product Description

The COMBUSTION FRESH AIR DAMPER, Series 'HOM' is motorized and used for the control of fresh air for combustion. It is patented and Code Certified to be field installed and interlocked with a thermostat of a furnace or aquastat of a boiler, using either oil, propane or natural gas. The damper is placed at the terminating end of an insulated fresh air inlet duct beside the furnace. When the thermostat asks for heat, this motorized damper opens to allow fresh air for complete combustion. When the furnace stops, the damper closes to prevent the entry of unnecessary cold air. This results in added comfort with a definite saving of fuel. Hoyme series 'SF1' dampers are used in single furnace applications, series 'SF2' dampers are used in dual furnace applications. HMI HOYME dampers and accessories are internationally certified by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) to include both the United States and Canada.

I installed a Hoyme vent 6 months ago, and after using it for some time, I am prepared to post a quick review.

I have a small enclosed furnace room and a gas-fired hot water heater, plus a gas fired hot water furnace. The room has two glass block windows and for years the fresh air intake was through two free flowing vents installed in place of couple of the glass blocks which had been knocked out. There were two consequences of this set up -- first, the furnace room was cold, which of itself was not an issue, but for the fact that it was located underneath the dining room, which as a consequence had a cold floor in areas. The second issue, is that with fresh air being pulled in through the vents, there tended to be a fair amount of dust that also was pulled into the room, making the floor fairly dirty. I installed the Hoyme vent pretty much as illustrated, wired to the furnace thermostat and with a heat sensor cutoff on the hot water heater exhaust. The vent works as advertised, opening and allowing fresh air just before the furnace boiler kicks on and maybe 20 seconds after the hot water boiler starts heating. The room temperature during the winter now runs about 15-20 degrees warmer, and the room does not seem to be sucking in a ton of dust. All in all the Hoyme vent seems to be an effective solution, perhaps one of a few, but certainly one that works pretty well. My dining room floor is no longer cold, which is also quite satisfying. The technical support was excellent and responsive.
