The Invacare Commode Xtra Wd Steel 450lb INV6497 has been valuable for me. It is strong and sturdy. I am a female, 5'8", and 250 lbs with a wide rear. During surgery to remove a brain tumor, I had a stroke, leaving me paralyzed on my right side. I have been in numerous hospitals and rehab facilities, and used all types and sizes of bedside, and over-the-toilet, commodes. This commode, even though I was told I did not need one this wide or able to carry so much weight, was the best choice for me. I have used it as a bedside commode, although it primarily sits over-the-toilet. It is not any heavier to lift and move than other commodes. It is very sturdy, does not wiggle and waiver when getting on or off, has a wonderful choice of heights which are very easy to adjust just by pushing the buttons on the legs. The legs are constructed so they are wide and provide the most stable positioning I have experienced. When I have to wipe, I lean to the right, and do NOT feel as if I am going to fall off, or that the commode is going to tip over. Very, very stable.
At home, I am in a wheelchair, or lift chair, all day & night. At this time, I sleep in my lift chair, as it seems to relieve the pressure on my head. Because of this, the backs of my legs are very sensitive and thin-skinned. The only problem with this (and other) commode(s) is that I find the front, underside edge of the toilet seat is sharp, and can easily cut the skin on the back of my leg(s).
I have solved this by putting a thick sock (I use tube socks and just let the extra hang down) over each of the front edges of both sides of the toilet seat. It may look a little odd, but after trying different things to prevent cuts on my skin, this has proven to be the most effective, comfortable and sanitary way to protect my skin, as the socks are very easy to remove & wash. Just replace with a clean pair of socks while washing!
I did get a "Duro-Med 2" Vinyl Toilet Seat Cushion" (from amazon.com) to put on the seat for comfort. It easily attaches to the toilet (commode) seat using its 4 velcro straps, makes a great difference on the bottom, and is well worth it!
I highly recommend the Invacare Commode Xtra Wd Steel 450lb INV6497 for anyone needing a bedside or over-the-toilet commode.
